Organisational Leadership & Consultancy

Sometimes you need to understand what is really happening

Organisations are complex.

Colleagues exploring organisational strategy
Experience. Evidence. Humanity. Accountability.

When performance changes, culture becomes difficult, relationships deteriorate or an organisation is going through significant growth or change, the presenting problem is not always the real problem.

EmpathyWorks provides independent leadership and organisational consultancy for organisations that want to understand what is happening, why it is happening and what needs to change.

We work alongside boards, senior leaders and leadership teams to explore the realities behind strategy, culture, leadership and performance. That can mean asking difficult questions, listening carefully to different perspectives, examining evidence and helping leaders recognise patterns that can be difficult to see from inside the organisation.

Our approach is diagnostic rather than prescriptive.

We don't arrive assuming we already know the answer, and we don't apply a generic consultancy model simply because it has worked somewhere else.

We take time to understand your organisation, your people, your purpose and the environment in which you operate. From there, we help turn insight into practical action.

Our work can include workplace and culture diagnostics, strategic and business-plan reviews, senior leadership-team development, facilitated leadership conversations, organisational change support and bespoke consultancy around specific challenges.

We are particularly comfortable working where things are complicated, where there may be competing perspectives, or where an organisation needs an independent voice prepared to ask the questions that others may find difficult to ask.

Sometimes the most valuable thing an organisation can do is create the space to see itself more clearly.

How we can support your organisation

Every organisation is different, but many of the challenges we encounter have something important in common: what appears to be a performance problem is often connected to something deeper.

Leadership, culture, relationships, trust, communication, psychological safety, clarity of purpose and the experience of people at work all influence how an organisation performs.

EmpathyWorks helps organisations understand those connections and decide what to do about them.

Workplace Diagnostics

Sometimes leaders know that something within their organisation isn't quite right, but understanding exactly what is happening can be difficult from the inside.

Our workplace diagnostics help organisations look beneath the surface.

Through structured assessment, confidential engagement with staff and leaders, and analysis of the themes and patterns that emerge, we help organisations develop a clearer picture of how people are experiencing leadership, culture and the workplace.

The purpose is not simply to produce another report. It is to create insight that leaders can act upon, identifying strengths that should be protected as well as areas where leadership, culture, relationships or organisational practice may need attention.

Organisational Culture

Culture isn't what an organisation says about itself. It is what people experience every day.

It is shaped by leadership behaviour, relationships, decisions, communication, expectations, accountability and what happens when things become difficult.

We help organisations understand the culture they currently have, the culture they want to create and, importantly, the gap between the two.

That work can involve organisational diagnostics, leadership conversations, staff engagement, facilitated sessions and practical support to translate cultural ambition into changes that people can actually experience.

Developing and Nurturing Your People

People are not simply a resource required to deliver an organisation's strategy. They are the people who make that strategy possible.

When people feel valued, trusted, supported and able to develop, organisations create the conditions in which individuals and teams are far more likely to contribute at their best.

That doesn't mean removing accountability or avoiding difficult conversations. Nurturing people means creating an environment where expectations are clear, development is taken seriously, good performance is recognised, challenge is constructive and people understand that their contribution matters.

Performance and productivity are not created simply by demanding more from people.

They are strengthened when good leadership creates the conditions in which people can perform well.

Investing in your people can strengthen confidence, capability, relationships, retention and organisational culture. Over time, those conditions can translate into stronger and more sustainable organisational performance.

Your people are one of your organisation's greatest assets. Good leadership ensures they know it, experience it and have the opportunity to fulfil their potential.

Leadership and Senior Team Development

The behaviour of senior leaders has a disproportionate influence on organisational culture.

We work with senior leadership teams to strengthen relationships, develop greater collective responsibility, improve the quality of leadership conversations and create greater clarity around how they want to lead their organisation.

This isn't simply about making a leadership team work better together.

It is about understanding the impact that team has on everyone else.

Because the culture experienced across an organisation is often shaped by the leadership practised at the top.

Strategic and Organisational Review

Sometimes an organisation needs an independent perspective.

EmpathyWorks undertakes focused reviews of strategy, business plans, organisational development, leadership arrangements and specific areas of organisational challenge.

We combine documentary and evidence review with conversations that help us understand the realities behind the information. That means looking not only at what an organisation intends to achieve, but at its capacity, leadership, culture and arrangements for turning those intentions into practice.

Our role is not simply to tell an organisation what it wants to hear.

We provide constructive, independent challenge, identify strengths and areas of concern, and help leaders translate our findings into clear, practical priorities for action.

The purpose of a review isn't simply to describe where an organisation is. It is to help leaders make better decisions about where it needs to go next.

Bespoke Organisational Consultancy

Not every organisational challenge fits neatly into a predefined service.

You may be navigating significant change, experiencing difficulties within a team, trying to understand a persistent cultural issue, preparing for growth or facing a leadership challenge that requires independent support.

In those circumstances, we can develop a bespoke piece of work around your organisation and the challenge, rather than trying to fit the challenge around a consultancy product.

We start by understanding what is happening. Then we work with you to determine what needs to happen next.

How we work with organisations

Meaningful organisational change rarely comes from a single workshop, report or intervention.

It begins with understanding.

We listen

Before recommending solutions, we take time to understand your organisation, its purpose, its people and the challenges you are experiencing.

That means listening to different perspectives, not simply the loudest voices or the most senior people in the room.

We diagnose

Where appropriate, we use workplace diagnostics, staff engagement, leadership conversations, document review and other evidence to build a clearer picture of what is happening across the organisation.

We look for patterns, strengths, disconnects and areas where the lived experience of the organisation may differ from its stated intentions.

We make sense of what we find

Data alone doesn't change organisations.

We help leaders interpret what the evidence is telling them, understand the connections between leadership, culture, behaviour and performance, and identify where attention is most needed.

Sometimes that means confirming what leaders already suspect. Sometimes it means uncovering something different.

We challenge

Independent consultancy should provide more than reassurance.

We constructively challenge assumptions, behaviours and established ways of working where the evidence suggests that challenge is needed.

We do this with respect, but we won't avoid difficult conversations simply because they are uncomfortable.

We develop

Understanding the problem is only the beginning.

We work with leaders, teams and organisations to strengthen leadership capability and create the conditions in which people can develop, contribute and perform.

That might involve executive coaching, senior-team development, facilitated leadership conversations, workshops or more sustained organisational development.

We turn insight into action

A diagnostic report sitting on a shelf changes very little.

We help organisations translate insight into clear priorities, practical actions and leadership behaviours that people can see and experience.

Where appropriate, we can remain alongside the organisation as those changes are implemented, providing challenge, coaching, review and ongoing leadership support.

Our aim isn't to make your organisation dependent on EmpathyWorks. It is to leave your leaders and your people better equipped to continue the work themselves.

When might you bring us in?

Organisations don't always need consultancy because something has gone wrong.

Sometimes the most effective time to seek independent support is when you can see change coming, when an organisation is growing, or when leaders recognise that something could be stronger.

You might bring EmpathyWorks in when:

  • Your organisation is going through significant growth, change or restructure and you want to understand the implications for leadership, people and culture.
  • You are concerned about organisational culture, staff engagement, morale or trust and want an independent understanding of what people are actually experiencing.
  • Your senior leadership team needs to become stronger and more effective, improving relationships, collective leadership, communication or clarity of purpose.
  • There is a gap between your organisation's values and people's everyday experience and you want to understand why.
  • Performance or productivity is becoming a concern and you want to explore whether leadership, culture, capability or workplace experience may be contributing.
  • Your organisation has experienced a difficult period, crisis or significant disruption and needs space to reflect, learn, recover and move forward.
  • You want to invest more deliberately in your people and leadership capability, creating the conditions for people to develop, contribute and perform.
  • Your strategy or business plan needs independent scrutiny, or you want to understand whether organisational ambition is translating effectively into priorities, behaviours and delivery.

You may also simply know that something needs to change without yet being entirely sure what the real issue is.

You don't need to arrive with a perfectly defined consultancy brief.

Often, our first job is helping you understand the question before deciding what the answer might be.

Start with a conversation

Tell us what is happening in your organisation, what you are seeing and what is concerning you.

We'll listen, ask questions and explore whether EmpathyWorks can help. If we can, we'll work with you to determine the most appropriate approach rather than selling you something you don't need.
